Date Sold 9/10/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47" x 63 1/4" [119 x 161 cm]) (Learn More) Oh Doctor!, the 1917 Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle silent romantic love triangle family relationship horse racing gambling jewel robbery comedy short starring Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle (in the title role as Dr. Fatty Holepoke), Buster Keaton (as Fatty's son, Junior Holepoke), Al St. John, Alice Mann, and Alice Lake. Note that this short is available for viewing on YouTube, and it packs a lot of plot into its 20 minutes! Fatty is a doctor who has been gambling away the family's money at the racetrack (he has a wife and a grown son, played by Buster Keaton). Meanwhile, a thieving woman and her male accomplice decide to rob Fatty's wife after the woman sees their house. She steals the wife's necklace and after many chases (including Fatty disguised as a policeman), everything works out okay. Buster Keaton's role is to constantly laugh at his father, and each time he is rewarded by being knocked down, which he does in a comical way. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster shows Fatty Arbuckle throwing son Buster Keaton at policemen, which involves artistic license, because the actual movie does not have this exact scene, but it is similar, and very much in character with the movie (which can be viewed, as we noted above). Also note that we have never auctioned any movie paper of any kind from this Fatty Arbuckle/Buster Keaton movie before being consigned this poster, and of course, ANY movie paper from any of the Fatty Arbuckle/Buster Keaton movies is beyond rare! This is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster. Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube). Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had varying amounts of paper loss at the crossfolds ranging from tiny to the size of a quarter. It had small tears, tiny paper loss, and darkening on parts of the folds and some darkening, pinholes, and small tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed with no excess linen on the top and bottom. Someone performed restoration to the folds, but left the borders alone. Not having excess linen caused a few small tears and tiny paper loss in the top blank border. One could certainly still display this wonderful poster exactly as it is, or one might choose to have it re-backed, but either way, it will look magnificent on the new owner's wall.
