An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Martyrs of the Alamo, the 1915 Christy Cabanne silent historical Texas War of Independence melodrama (supervised by D.W. Griffith) starring Sam De Grasse, Allan Sears (as Davy Crockett), Walter Long, Alfred Paget (as Jim Bowie), and Tom Wilson (as Sam Houston). There is a flimsy story that Douglas Fairbanks appears in this movie, but it doesn't seem to hold up very well at all, although he might appear on the screen in a bit part. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this movie (from which we have never auctioned ANY movie paper of any kind) was first released in November of 1915. The earliest lobby cards known date from that time. So it is possible this card is from 1915 (especially because it has the original releasing company, Triangle/Fine Arts, and it has the Triangle/Fine Arts logo with the Triangle border design. Of course, it is also possible that it is from an early unmarked re-release, or even possibly a continuous first release from 1916. We think it is more likely first release because D.W. Griffith is only billed as "Griffith", and we think that after 1916 he would have surely been prominently billed as "D.W. Griffith". If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: fair. Someone had two cards from this movie, and one card must have had much damage on the right, and the other card must have had much damage on the left. They cut one card near the center and then cut the missing amount from the other card, and then merged the two cards together. That means that what appears to be a montage image is really two unrelated scenes that have been joined together! Obviously, this is a very significant defect, but it is not apparent at first glance, and the card otherwise displays pretty well. But please bear in mind this most unusual defect before bidding on this card! Learn More about condition grades
