An Original Vintage Linenbacked Autographed World War I Poster (measures 30" x 40 1/2" [76 x 103 cm]) (Learn More) Another Notch Chateau Thierry, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) poster ("U.S. Marines") featuring Adolph Treidler artwork of a smiling U.S. Marine Corps soldier carving a new notch into his rifle stock (which was a common practice to mark enemy kills). The U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Note that the Battle of Chateau-Thierry was fought in 1918 and was one of the first actions of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) under General John J. 'Black Jack' Pershing. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Adolph Treidler Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by the artist, Adolph Treidler (he signed it in 1978, and it is dated next to his signature)! Our consignor is a longtime collector who purchased this signed item from a reputable dealer. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic. Also note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this war poster, and that was 14 years ago! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. As noted above, it was signed by the artist 61 years after he drew it (three years before his death). The signature is somewhat smudged (see our image). The poster also had a faint tape stain in the left of the top border and tiny paper loss in the top right corner. It had some tears and tape stains in the bottom border, with tiny paper loss. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed onto a thin linen with small excess on all sides, and at some point after it was backed, it was roughly handled, which caused creases scattered down the lower one-third of the right border and it likely acquired faint brown dot stains in the bottom and in the lower right at that time. It also acquired a diagonal crease in the bottom left corner, and some creases across the bottom. If I owned this very cool poster, I could see framing it as it is, or one could certainly have it re-backed, but bear the above defects in mind before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
