Date Sold 5/1/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Wicked Darling, the 1919 Tod Browning silent romantic crime melodrama (based on the story 'The Moth' by Evelyn Campbell; about a girl from the slums who falls in with a pickpocket, who makes her help him; but when she retrieves a valuable necklace that a society woman dropped, she ends up in the company of her ex-fiance, and she falls for him and tries to go straight, but the pickpocket has other ideas) starring Priscilla Dean, Wellington A. Playter, Lon Chaney, Spottiswoode Aitken, Gertrude Astor, Kalla Pasha, and Martha Mattox. Note that this movie was made during the time when Lon Chaney's star was rising drastically, yet he was still third billed! It is not surprising he was billed under Priscilla Dean, but it seems amazing that he was billed under Willington A. Playter. Just a short time later, Chaney would become a top billed actor, and a few years later, he would be a superstar. Movie paper from this title is beyond rare! We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this lobby card! Also note that this wonderful lobby card, and several other Lon Chaney Sr. items that are in this Major Auction, were purchased from us over the last few years by a very longtime collector. He has very unfortunately had significant health issues, which has caused him to re-consign these items. This is the same example of this lobby card that we auctioned previously, so other than this card, which has now come back to auction for the above reason, we still have never auctioned any other movie paper item from this movie! Note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. The card was "starch backed", which means that it was moistened with a special starch solution, attached to a backing, allowed to dry, and then the card had touch up while it was backed, and afterward, the backing was removed. This particular card had paper loss in the top right that was roughly triangular and measured approximately 4" x 6", but very fortunately, it only affected the blank border, the blank green border, and a thin strip of the top of the door. There was paper loss in the lower right blank border and in the lower left blank border. There was a 1 1/2" tear in the right of the bottom blank border and creases in the middle of the right border, extending a little into Chaney's jacket. While there was much paper loss in the card, luckily the image area was mostly unaffected by the above defects. The card was starch backed by a talented professional, and the missing paper was replaced, and few collectors would realize that it was ever missing. You can see the creases in the middle of the right border, but the rest of the restoration is not very noticeable at all. The card has had significant restoration, but I would think most collectors would be happy to display it on their wall as is, and certainly, some additional restoration could be performed. Obviously, one would prefer to find an unrestored example of this card, but since we have never seen ANY movie paper item from this movie prior to this, it might be a long wait before one finds any other item other than this!
