An Original 1950 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Folded Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14" x 21" [36 x 53 cm]) (Learn More)

Superman, the 1948 Spencer Gordon Bennet & Thomas Carr science fiction (sci-fi) comic book superhero serial ("A Columbia Serial"; "Rocketing Into A Mighty Adventure!"; "Challenged by treachery!"; "Racing toward doom!"; "By arrangement with National Comics Publications, Inc."; "Based on the Superman adventure feature appearing in Superman and Action Comics magazines, in daily and Sunday newspapers coast-to-coast and on the Superman radio program broadcast over the Mutual Network.") starring Kirk Alyn (in the title role as Superman/Clark Kent), Noel Neill (who later reprised her role as Lois Lane in the TV show), Carol Forman (as "Spider Lady"), Tommy Bond (as Jimmy Olsen; best remembered as Butch the bully from the Our Gang series), Pierre Watkin (as Perry White), Wheeler Oakman, Nelson Leigh (as Jor-El), Luana Walters (as Lara), Virginia Carroll (as Martha Kent), and Ed Cassidy (as Eben Kent). Note that Superman was created in 1938 as a comic book hero, but it took ten long years for a movie to be made depicting him (perhaps moviemakers were deterred by the expensive budget required to have Superman perform his great feats of strength and flying!). This item is from that very first movie, the serial entitled "Superman"! Republic Pictures had tried to make a Superman serial in 1941, but DC wanted more money than they were willing to pay, and they ended up making a Captain Marvel serial instead. Two years later, they made the first Batman serial, and it would not be for five more years before they finally made this serial!

Artist: Jiel
Important Added Info: Note that this serial was released in Belgium in two feature films. The first one was not labeled part 1 (which seems very deceptive, since it would end without the movie having an "ending"!). The second one does have "EPOQUE 2" on it. We have only auctioned one of each poster in all our years of auctioning. The one like this one, for part 2, sold for $1,925, and the one for part 1 auctioned for $1,909. Both have unusual images of Superman, and the one for part 1 has him wearing a mostly red suit! In the case of THIS poster, the theater that used it was showing both parts of the serial over successive days, because they put a paper snipe over the "EPOQUE 2" area at top center (below the title), and they added two snipes at the top telling when part 1 and part 2 would be shown, but of course, that snipe can be removed.

Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14" x 21" [36 x 53 cm]. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: good. As noted above, there is a paper snipe glued over the "EPOQUE 2" area below the title. It can be removed by any professional, while the poster is being linenbacked. Also, as noted above, there are two snipes at the top explaining when the two parts of the movie would be shown. Someone trimmed off most of the bottom border, but they left the printer information in the right of the bottom border, but the printing in the left of the bottom border, which read "IMPRIME EN BELGIQUE" was trimmed off. The poster was folded once in each direction, and there are horizontal creases in the center and scattered throughout the poster. Obviously, the new owner of this great (and rare) poster can choose to either display it as it is, or they can have any degree of restoration performed. Whatever they choose, this poster will display wonderfully on their wall!
