An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Five Graves to Cairo, the 1943 Billy Wilder World War II (WWII) Egypt British-in-Africa military spy espionage romantic action thriller ("Did a Woman Start the Rout of Rommel?"; "Based on a play by Lajos Biro"; about an English undercover agent stationed in northern Africa who discovers that the Nazis have hidden stockpiles of supplies in different bases across northern Africa, and he has to figure out a way to alert the Allies while behind enemy lines, with the aid of a beautiful woman) starring Franchot Tone, Anne Baxter, Akim Tamiroff, Erich von Stroheim ("as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel", The Desert Fox), and Peter Van Eyck NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still is a key book still, printed on a deluxe heavyweight paper stock. Many studios spent extra money to have their most special photos, the key book stills, either backed with linen or printed on a heavy paper, both of which enhanced their durability. They had an extra 1" at the left or top, with punch holes, because of how they were stored. Key book stills are far more rare than regular stills, which has increased their popularity among collectors, since only a few keybooks were manufactured per film, and a key book still is guaranteed to be authentic. Someone trimmed away the extra 1" from the left of the still. Note that this still likely has a stamp on the back in the form of a diamond that has the letters "TRR". One certainly might wonder who placed this stamp there and why. The answer is that 160 of the stills in this set of auctions come to us from a still collector who has collected for many decades, and long ago he began stamping the back of almost his stills with this stamp, and "TRR" is his initials! Each of those stills is stamped lightly, and the stamp does NOT affect the front of the still. He is a VERY advanced collector, and he has consigned many wonderful stills to us! Condition: very good.
