An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36") (Learn More)

The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age.

Important Added Info: Note that this is an EXTREMELY rare poster! In all the years I have sold tens of millions of dollars of movie posters, I have sold several examples of each style of half-sheet, several complete sets of lobby cards, and even a three-sheet, but I have never before sold an insert! I can see a good argument that this poster has the best image of any of the posters created for this movie! Also

Condition: very good. The poster was separated and had tiny paper loss on each of the three folds. There were pinholes, creases, smudges, and a few small tears around the edges of the poster, and smudges in the solid yellow background areas. The poster was owned by a poster collector some 40 years ago. He made the decision to "repair" the poster by putting clear tape on the back of each of the three separated folds, and then also put a strip of clear tape across the front of each separated fold. Obviously, it would have been much better if he had not put tape on the front of the poster, but on the other hand, he was one of the few people who sought out a Wizard of Oz insert in the early 1960s, and one of the very few who saved it over the following 40 years, so we can forgive him this mistake! A very talented restorer very carefully removed the tape from the front and back of the poster and then paperbacked it. They then very carefully performed painstaking detailed touch up solely to the folds. This means that you can see that there has been restoration on the folds when looking at the poster close up, but from any distance away, it is not at all distracting, and it means the poster does not have that heavily restored look so typical of posters backed by restorers who attempt to make them look "perfect". The person who did the restoration put new blank white paper over most of the borders to even out the appearance (but the small writing at the bottom of the poster was not covered over). This is a common technique used by several top restorers. It is done so well that the majority of collectors are not even aware it has been done, and many do not feel it to be a significant detraction (since it is only blank white area). I prefer for posters with tattered borders to be restored in this way, for if you leave the borders with many minor restored areas, it is distracting to your eye, and I do not mind covering over blank white paper, especially since it never shows when the poster is framed. Overall, you can see the restoration the poster has had from inches away, and you can see that the yellow background has smudges, but from any distance away, you DON'T see the restoration, and the smudges just give it an authentic look and feel, and I think this poster looks fantastic! I can't imagine a poster collector who would not be thrilled to display it on their wall!
