An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed Deluxe 10" x 13" [25 x 33 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Gilda Gray was an actress from the 1920s to the 1930s. She had a fascinating life! She was born as Marianna Michalska in Poland in 1901 and her parents died, and she was adopted from an orphanage by a couple who took her to America in 1909, and had her singing in a saloon as a teen. She became a cabaret dancer in New York City, and she invented "The Shimmy", where she wiggled her hips and shoulders, while maintaining an innocent expression. This earned her the nickname of "The Shimmy Girl" and became a massive success, but she scandalized many people. Still, Miss Gray rode it to great fame, including appearing in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1922. She entered movies, and had success in the middle 1920s. But she lost her life savings in the 1929 Stock Market Crash, and in 1931, she had a heart attack, and she had also had three failed marriages. She made one more film appearance in 1936 and she filed for bankruptcy in 1941. In 1946, she sued Columbia Pictures, claiming that their hit "Gilda" was based on her life, and after eight years, she received a "substantial" out of court settlement. She passed away in 1959 from food poisoning at the age of 58. Surely a movie of her fascinating up-and-down life will be made someday! Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Gilda Gray (she autographed it to Max Factor, the famous makeup man)! Someone wrote on the back of the still "Gilda Gray and her own lovely ash-blonde hair, which she is apparently never allowed to display on either stage or screen" (it is certainly possible that Max Factor added that inscription to the back!). Also note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 10" x 13" [25 x 33 cm]. Finally, note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock and it has an embossed photographer's signature in the bottom left. Note that this item was consigned to us by a man who has been a major movie memorabilia dealer for many years. During that time, he would regularly purchase collections of movie memorabilia from both collectors and people who worked on movies, and in some of those collections he purchased many autographed items, and sometimes he met with celebrities and had them autograph items he owned in person. Both we and our consignor feel it is extremely likely that the autograph on this item is authentic, but he does not have a certificate of authenticity. Condition: good. The still was neatly trimmed, no doubt to fix a frame. There is deterioration and color change in Miss Gray's hair and in the right side of her face and the top of her neck (see our image).
