An Original Vintage 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" [17 x 22 cm] News Photo (Learn More) So Red The Rose, the 1935 King Vidor historical Civil War romantic melodrama ("The flower of Southern chivalry... dewed with the shining glory of a woman's tears"; "From Stark Young's novel") starring Margaret Sullavan, Walter Connolly, Randolph Scott, Elizabeth Patterson, Janet Beecher, Robert Cummings (in his first real movie after a single uncredited role two years earlier!), Dickie Moore, Clarence Muse, and Charles Starrett. Note that this film performed poorly at the box office, which perpetuated the myth that Civil War films were box office poison (a myth shattered by Gone With The Wind). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this news photo, which measures 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" [17 x 22 cm], is fascinating, because it shows Margaret Sullavan with "second unit director" Elizabeth Hill. Who was Elizabeth Hill? She married director King Vidor in 1932, and he hired her as screenwriter on some of his most famous movies, including "Our Daily Bread". This still shows that she was intended to become a director as well (and the snipe on the back says that she is "perhaps Hollywood's only woman director", and it also says she is the "second unit director" on this movie, but she is not credited that way in the IMDb, and we can find no evidence of her doing any directing, so we don't know what occurred. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades
