An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band, the 1938 Henry King musical ("An American Cavalcade!"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; written by Irving Berlin; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck) starring Tyrone Power Jr. (in the title role as Roger Grant/Alexander), Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Ethel Merman, Jack Haley, Jean Hersholt, Helen Westley, John Carradine, Paul Hurst, Wally Vernon, Ruth Terry, Douglas Fowley, Chick Chandler, and Eddie Collins NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a VERY unusual poster! 20th Century-Fox released this movie in 1938, and it was extremely popular. We know that it was re-released in both 1944 and 1947, because there are posters dated from both those years, and while THIS poster is possibly from 1944, it could be from between 1938 and 1944, because Fox replaced the original tagline, which read "AN AMERICAN CAVALCADE!" with "BY POPULAR DEMAND!" at the top left, and they used that phrase starting in 1939 (we found newspaper ads as early as 1939 that say "by popular demand" on them, which indicates it was back in theaters by 1939, but this terminology apparently was used through 1944, so we can't say for certain whether this poster is from 1939 or the first few years of the 1940s). They also changed the layout and the size of the lower credits, but left the artwork alone. The small printing at the bottom has the same information as the 1938 one-sheet, including a 1938 copyright date, which is odd, but not unheard of (for studios to reuse original release information on re-release posters). ANY one-sheets from this movie are incredibly rare. We only auctioned one example of the 1938 first release one-sheet with this image, and that was 24 years ago, when it sold for $1,495, and we have NEVER before auctioned this one-sheet! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the top two crossfolds and it had small tears and tiny paper loss in the right of the top fold, including in Power's chin. It had minor wear on the other folds and some tears and paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
