Date Sold 3/14/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 41 3/4" [70 x 106 cm]) (Learn More) Jesse James, the circa 1910s cowboy western stage play production ("The sensational Western life drama"; "The Missouri Outlaw"). Note that we have seen multiple posters that are likely from the same production. Some mention "W.I. Swain's Western Spectacular Production" and some do not. Also, some posters include art of a black African American couple. All of the posters have been printed by the Donaldson Litho Co of Newport, KY. It is certainly possible that there were multiple different productions (perhaps one even had an all-black cast). We have seen other similar posters to these in museum collections, and they have guessed at dates of "1890s" to "1920s", but our guess is that these are 1910s. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster! We have only auctioned two in all our years of auctioning (and the last time was in 2014 and it sold for $425.) Both of those came from a very interesting find of early stage posters. Our consignor thought we had auctioned that last of what he had in 2016, but he just discovered two more of the Jesse James posters (one each of two styles), and we are currently auctioning them in two separate auctions, and then there are no more posters left from this find! Condition: fair. The poster is extremely fragile and it has tears and paper loss around the edges with a very long l-shaped tear in the upper right corner which has completely separated that area from the rest of the poster, with an extra tear in the lower part of the long tear. Obviously this poster urgently needs restoration, but since it is almost all "there", it will not be a difficult restoration, and once it is properly restored it would display wonderfully on the new owner's wall.
