Artist: Tom William Chantrell Important Added Info: Note that there is much discussion in the movie poster hobby as to whether the style C "Star Wars" posters that exist were actually printed in 1977, or whether they were printed at a later date. Some people say that the posters were only printed for use in other countries, which is why they have no ratings box. But the discovery in 2000 of these style C printer's tests (one of which is offered in this auction; see below for more about these posters) seems to negate that argument, because obviously the posters were intended to have a rating. It seems quite possible that after these proofs were printed, it was decided not to use this poster, and perhaps someone later convinced a printer to run off a bunch of these style C posters, but without the ratings box (perhaps this WAS for use outside the U.S.). Also note that this is a very rare uncut printer's test! Before a poster was printed in large quantities, the printer would print a limited number of posters as "test" posters. Commonly, they would leave the color chart on the left edge of the poster, which added an extra inch to the width of the poster (which explains why the poster measures 28" x 41"). These printer's tests would then be shown to the various people in a position to "OK" them, and once they were completely approved, the printer would print the full print run of the posters. Not only is a printer's test far more rare than a regular poster, but it is also 100% genuine, there is no fear of purchasing a reproduction! Also note that this style C poster has the "PG" ratings box in it. It is commonly believed that no style Cs were distributed within the United States, which is why almost every known style C has no ratings box (if they were intended for use outside the United States, they did not need a ratings box). The poster offered here shows that the distributors did originally intend to have a style C poster within the U.S. with ratings, but perhaps it was decided that it would not be used at the last minute, and so it may well be that the only genuine style Cs with rating boxes are the few printer's tests that survived! Also note that this poster was never machine folded. Most movie posters from before 1980 were machine folded immediately after printing, but a very few were left unfolded. An unfolded poster from before 1980 is almost always far more difficult to find than a folded poster of the same title, and finding unfolded posters in excellent condition is even more difficult! Condition: fine. There are the absolute most minor of border defects. The poster is in really wonderful condition! Learn More about condition grades
