An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 42") (Learn More) Tom Mix Circus was a 1930s traveling circus ("Tom Mix 'himself' and Tony will positively appear at each performance"; "Tom Mix and Tony [in person]"; "Colossal array of American and European stars"; "Idol of millions - the hero of American youth") run by and starring Tom Mix. Cowboy western movie actor Tom Mix was the headline star of the Sells Floto circus from 1929 to 1932. He was paid $20,000 a week! Unfortunately, the success of that circus caused Mix to leave Sells Floto and after appearing with some other circuses, he started his own circus in 1935, and it ruined him financially (likely because it was during the height of The Great Depression), and it folded in 1938. Note that at the time he headlined in his own circus, he was between 55 and 58 years old, and yet he still performed many of his classic stunts and sharpshooting routines himself! Even more amazing, his horse from his movie days, Tony (The Wonder Horse), appeared with him even through his time in his own circus, when Tony was in his late 30s! The poster had creases and some very tiny dot areas of paper loss on the vertical foldline and even less wear on the horizontal foldlines. There were pinholes around the edges of the image. It appears that the original border of the poster was trimmed off, as the solid green border around the edges of the poster has been newly created (I assume the person who did this had seen another example of the poster, and knew that it was supposed to have a solid green border, or perhaps enough traces of the border remained to use as a guide). Apparently, after linenbacking, the poster picked up two tiny chips of surface paper loss, one in the left of the second "C" of "CIRCUS" in the title, and one to the left of the bottom left image of Don Silver (in the yellow background). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed. The defects were well restored, and the poster displays great, although it would make sense to have a restorer touch up the two tiny areas of surface paper loss described above (it could be done in minutes by any talented restorer).
