Date Sold 11/8/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A 1938 Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Dracula, the classic 1931 Tod Browning Universal vampire monster horror thriller ("The Greatest of all Horror Thrillers"; "The Vampire Thriller!"; "The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known!"; "Do vampires really exist?"; "From the famous novel & play by Bram Stoker") starring Bela Lugosi (in the title role as Count Dracula), David Manners, Helen Chandler, Dwight Frye (if there had been a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in 1931, Frye would have surely won it for his wild over-the-top portrayal as Renfield!), Edward Van Sloan (as Professor Abraham Van Helsing), Frances Dade, and Herbert Bunston NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned two other examples of this card, and only one in the past 16 years! Also note that this classic horror movie was re-released in 1938, just seven years after its first release. Apparently it proved extremely popular in that first re-release, because it stayed in release into 1939, and more movie paper was needed (surely because they ran out of 1938 movie paper), and they printed a 1939 set of lobby cards, with at least some different scenes (we have not seen the entire set). We have noted the copyright date on this card, for those who care about this distinction (we have previously auctioned lobby cards with a 1938 copyright and also others with a 1939 copyright, so we know this was intentionally done and was not an error). Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. The card has some tiny bits of surface paper loss scattered in the top blank border, with some smudges and small stains around the edges, including one in the bottom of the "L" of "DRACULA". It has some faint darkening in the top left corner that slightly extends into the background. It had clear tape on the back of the top corners, where it was attached to a mat. That was later removed, and it was attached to a mat with thin strips of conservation tape on the back of part of the top border. There is glue in the bottom left corner where a weak blank corner was secured, but otherwise, the card has had no restoration. Obviously, the card can be displayed as it is, especially because almost all the defects are in the blank borders. Certainly, restoration could be performed. Either way, the new owner will have a wonderful card to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
