Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Folded Japanese Three-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 40" x 87") (Learn More) Nippon Tanjo (released in the U.S. in 1960 as "The Three Treasures"), the 1959 Hiroshi Inagaki Japanese fantasy adventure religious melodrama ("A spectacular epic of the loves and battles of Prince Yamato, a legendary hero of old Japan"; "Another major achievement of extraordinary power and beauty by the special effects genius, Eiji Tsuhuraya"; "The greatest of Toho's great films of special effects photography."; about the legend of the birth of Shintoism, and Mifune plays two roles; he is an Japanese god who defeats an eight-headed hydra-like dragon, and from its tail he extracts a magic sword, which he gives to the son of the Japanese Emperor [also played by Mifune!], who is sent on a dangerous mission so that he will be killed and his stepbrother can become the new Emperor instead, and the help of the gods and the magic sword allow him to triumph over certain death) starring Toshiro Mifune, Yoko Tsukasa, Akihiko Hirata, Kyoko Kagawa, Takashi Shimura, and Setsuko Hara. Note that this movie is little known in the United States, except by film buffs, but in many ways, it was a Japanese "answer" to the epic U.S. movie, "The Ten Commandments", made three years earlier. It was over three hours long, and while it has notable fantasy sequences, it deals with the birth of Shintoism in Japan, just as The Ten Commandments dealt with the birth of Judaism in Egypt. It was released in the U.S. in a greatly shortened version (less than two hours), and the existing complete prints are not of high quality. It would seem that someone should surely undertake a complete restoration of this important Japanese movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this Japanese poster measures 40" x 87" and was printed in 3 sections (which have been combined during linenbacking). Condition: very good to fine. The poster is linenbacked; prior to restoration the poster had many creases along the part of the bottom foldline that runs through the "ree" of "Three" and many creases down the furthest right vertical foldline which runs down through the final "r" of "Treasures"; the right 24" of the top border has many creases and small tears as does the top 6" of the right border; there are creases and smudges at the right end of the top foldline; other than the above defects, the poster was in pretty nice condition prior to linenbacking; these relatively minor defects were well corrected during linenbacking (you can see traces of restoration from close up), but from any distance away, the poster looks quite nice!
