eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 8r099 CHARLIE CHAN IN PANAMA TC 1940 Asian detective Sidney Toler, Jean Rogers, ultra rare! Date Sold 8/16/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Panama, the 1940 Norman Foster Central America Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("One puff from a deadly cigarette... and the fleet is marked for Doom! Can Chan strike fast enough?"; "One minute more... and the fleet is doomed!"; "A plot so fiendishly clever even Chan is astounded!"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Sidney Toler (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Jean Rogers, Lionel Atwill, Mary Nash, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Sen Yung"), Kane Richmond, Chris-Pin Martin, Lionel Royce, Helen Ericson, Jack La Rue, and Addison Richards. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. The card had a 1" tear near the center of the top border, with some staining in that area, and someone put a piece of tape on the back of that area, and then performed restoration to the front, but they did not back the card. Otherwise, the card had a few creases and tiny tears around the edges and the card displays well, although the restoration in the top blank border is noticeable (see our image).
