Date Sold 6/11/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Movie Script (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm], 104 pages) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Opera, the 1936 H. Bruce Humberstone detective mystery crime thriller ("Warner Oland vs. Boris Karloff"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; in a plot that heavily borrows from "The Phantom of the Opera", Karloff is an escapee from an insane asylum who had lost his memory, but now does remember, and hides in an opera house, determined to get revenge on those who tried to murder him 13 years earlier) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Boris Karloff, Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Charlotte Henry, Thomas Beck, Margaret Irving, and William Demarest. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that this script is the revised final shooting draft from August 31, 1936 and the screenplay was written by Scott Darling & Charles S. Belden. The name "H. Bruce Humberstone" is written on the cover of the script, and Humberstone was the director for the movie, so this script was his personal copy (and we know this for certain, because we previously auctioned a number of items from Mr. Humberstone's estate, and this came from the same source). Also note that the script has the working title "Murder in the Opera", but the movie ultimately was called "Charlie Chan at the Opera". Condition: good to very good. There is paper loss in the top left corner of the cover and tiny paper loss in the right corners. Otherwise, the script is in pretty nice condition.
