Date Sold 9/7/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1926 (from the first release of this movie in Japan) Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Japanese Movie Poster (measures 14" x 24 3/4" [36 x 63 cm]) (Learn More) Greed, the classic 1925 Erich von Stroheim silent quest-for-money-and-what-it-does-to-people melodrama (about the sudden fortune won from a lottery that fans such destructive greed that it ruins the lives of the three people involved; "From the famous novel 'McTeague' by Frank Norris"; "Screen adaptation and scenario by Erich von Stroheim and June Mathis") starring Gibson Gowland, Zasu Pitts, Jean Hersholt, Chester Conklin, and Sylvia Ashton. Note that the movie was filmed in 1923 but problems with editing the film to a manageable length delayed it's premier until December 1924 and the general release to January 1925! Also note that, sadly, much of the film is completely lost, but amazingly, dedicated fans reconstructed a 239 minute version of the movie in 1999, using still photographs to fill in the many missing sections! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that six years ago, we were consigned another first release Japanese poster from this classic movie that measures the same size, but it is a different style from the poster we are currently auctioning! Note that virtually NO posters survive from Japan before World War II! Likely this is because of paper shortages during the war, similar to what existed in several European countries. Finding ANY pre-World War II Japanese posters is extremely rare; to find one from a major movie like this one is even more rare! Also note that this really cool Japanese 14" x 31" poster was designed to be hung like a banner and has a metal rod attached to the back along the top edge! Also note that this poster has been significantly trimmed at the bottom (and the paper loss is uneven across the bottom) and it now measures 14" x 24 3/4" [36 x 63 cm]. Finally, note that while we could roll this poster and send it in a tube, we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package, because it is so fragile. If the new owner wanted it sent in a tube, then it would not be returnable, and we would not combine it with other purchases. Condition: poor. Approximately 6" was trimmed from the bottom of the poster and then there is uneven paper loss at the bottom of what remains (see our image). There are tears and stains around the edges of the portion that is present, with a lesser number of smudges and faint stains in the image. There is a metal rod attached to the top edge on the back, so that it could be hung like a banner. Obviously, this poster has really major problems, but if one could locate an image of an untrimmed example, then it could be restored, and even if such an image can't be located, it could just have the bottom restored, so that it would become a smaller poster, or it could also be left as it is.
