An Original Vintage Linenbacked French World War I Poster (measures 29 3/4" x 45 1/4" [76 x 115 cm]) (Learn More) 2me Emprunt De La Defense Nationale (literally translates to "2nd Loan of the National Defense"), the 1916 French World War I (WWI) War Bonds poster (with a tagline that translates to "Forward, Army of Savings, it's for the Homeland") encouraging people to buy war bonds, and featuring Alcide Theophile Robaudi artwork of a crowd of people depositing money at the feet of Marianne (the national symbol of France) who is in front of the La Marseillaise sculpture. Artist: Alcide Theophile Robaudi Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster, which we have never auctioned before! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only pre-war heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had darkened somewhat, typical of French posters from this period. It had small tears in parts of the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking.
