An Original 1946 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14 1/4" x 30 3/4" [36 x 78 cm]) (Learn More) The Sea Hawk, the 1940 Michael Curtiz swashbuckling romantic pirate adventure thriller ("Never before so many thrills! Never such adventure, such romance! Sail to high adventure with 'The Robin Hood of the Sea'!"; set in the time of the war between England and Spain, and the English navy has had no success against the Spanish armada, and in desperation, Queen Elizabeth hires a buccaneer to see what he can do, and of course, he has much success!) starring Errol Flynn, Brenda Marshall, Claude Rains, Donald Crisp, Flora Robson (as Queen Elizabeth I), Alan Hale Sr., and Henry Daniell NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is the second example of this poster that we have auctioned that was printed on the back of a map. We have also auctioned several examples of posters that seem identical (in printing and size), but were not printed on the back of maps. It is quite possible that some paper was available at this time, but it is also possible that the ones that are not on the back of maps are from the later continuous first release of the movie (and this poster has a date of "22 Oct 1946" printed at the top, while the general release in Belgium may have continued throughout 1947, since the movie was very popular). In any event, this poster is surely from the first Belgian release in 1946. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this poster is printed on the back of part of a map! Why is this? During World War II, there were massive paper shortages in Belgium. Where Belgian movie posters had previously been approximately 23" x 32", there was such a shortage of paper that not only did they often have to print them on the back of other posters or maps, but during World War II, the size of the posters shrank dramatically, with some of them as small as 11" x 15". This situation continued even after World War II, until around 1946 or 1947, when they began making Belgian movie posters in a size of roughly 14" x 22", which became the standard size, and continued for decades! The posters like these that are from during World War II or immediately after, and which are printed in a small size (often on the back of other posters or maps) are INCREDIBLY rare (surely they did not print many, and surely many of them were soon recycled themselves! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The theater that used this poster glued a 9" snipe over the bottom blank border of the poster, with details about what they were showing. The person who had this poster linenbacked had it backed with that snipe still attached, but of course, the new owner could choose to fold that area back or even trim it off. Prior to linenbacking, the poster had been printed on the back of a map (see above). It is fortunate that it is the kind where the map lines from the back barely show through to the front, and otherwise, the poster was in pretty nice condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed with the snipe attached (as noted above) with no excess. Learn More about condition grades
