An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 55" x 78" [140 x 198 cm]) (Learn More) Le Mepris (released in English-speaking countries as "Contempt"), the 1963 (released in the U.S. in 1964) Jean-Luc Godard French/Italian movie-making romantic love triangle melodrama ("Bardot is the body beautiful... she knows it... and she shows it!"; "Based on the novel by Alberto Moravia"; a very complex story about a screenwriter who is assigned by his producer to make a screenplay of "The Odyssey" more commercial, and he has a beautiful young wife who believes he wants her to sleep with the producer to help his career) starring Brigitte Bardot, Jack Palance, Michel Piccoli, Fritz Lang, and Giorgia Moll. Note that the director of the movie-within-the-movie is identified as Fritz Lang, and the legendary director plays himself! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Giuliano Nistri Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Italian poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this partially Italian movie! Also note that this Italian two-panel was printed in 2 sections designed to overlap. Condition: fair to good. This poster had its title in Italian in the black banner area at the top (the title "IL DISPREZZO" was printed in light blue over the solid black). Someone needed to use this poster in France, so they had a talented painter paint black over the Italian title, and then used a blue paint that matched the Italian title and painted the title in French over that area. If you look at our image, you can clearly see where the paint was applied. It would almost surely be difficult or impossible to remove the added paint, but any talented restorer could repaint the Italian title over the French title, and they could likely do so where it was not very obvious at all. Another choice would be to simply leave the poster as it is, and display it with the French title! However, bear in mind this significant defect before placing a bid on this poster. Aside from this unusual defect, the poster is in pretty nice condition, with minor fold and border wear. Learn More about condition grades
