A 1947 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

You Can't Cheat an Honest Man, the classic 1939 Edward F. Cline & George Marshall family relationship romantic circus screwball comedy ("Original Story by Charles Bogle", which was one of Fields' many pseudonyms!) starring W.C. Fields, Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy, Mortimer Snerd (billed as "Mortimer"), Constance Moore, Mary Forbes, Thurston Hall, Princess Baba (as herself), John Arledge, Charles Coleman, Edward Brophy, Arthur Hohl, Blacaman, and Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson. Note that Charlie McCarthy was Edgar Bergen's ventriloquist dummy, but in the movie he is treated as though he is a human boy, and there is almost no reference to Bergen talking "for" McCarthy!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that Universal re-released this classic comedy in 1947, just eight years after it was first released. We had never auctioned even one item from this re-release until we were consigned this one-sheet! Likely this is because just two years later, the movie was re-released again by Realart, along with many other Universal movies, and likely at that time, all the 1947 re-release posters were used up or destroyed.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds, with extra creases, tiny tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of several folds, and some paper loss scattered in the top blue and white background areas. There were some pinholes, tears, and areas of paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
