Date Sold 6/10/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Group of 8 Photographic Negatives (measure 4" x 5" [10 x 13 cm]) (Learn More) The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic 1951 Robert Wise science fiction (sci-fi) alien-contact thriller ("From out of space.... a warning and an ultimatum!"; "Strange power from another planet menaces the Earth!"; from the story by Harry Bates; about a super intelligent alien visiting the Earth, and mankind mistrusts him without reason; he is able to "pass" as a human, and he visits the world's greatest scientist, and when he is injured and taken to a hospital, he is rescued by his robot Gort) starring Michael Rennie (as Klaatu), Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin (as Gort the Robot). Note that the unusual music heard in this movie was achieved through the use of the musical instrument called a theramin, and audiences loved the eerie sounds it made, and it became standard in many science fiction movies thereafter to use this instrument in the same way! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that these really cool negatives were taken when this classic movie premiered on the West Coast. They show that the studio hired people to wear wacky alien costumes that were not like the ones worn by Klaatu or Gort in the actual movie. The "aliens" were apparently flown to the premiere in a special plane, and taken in a car that had a sign on the door advertising the movie. There are images taken by and in the movie theater that show posters that were on the wall! This auction includes an envelope that this these negatives were found in, and it has a date of 10/5/51 written on it, which is one week after the premiere (see our image)! Note that these are the negatives that were in the camera when the photographer shot each photo. We have taken a scan of the negatives as they appear, and also a special scan of the negatives that show the "positive image" of each. We will provide the winning bidder of this auction with those positive image scans. They often (but not always) have retouching on the emulsion side, and negative numbers written in India ink on the front. Depending on the studio some 8x10 negatives may be trimmed or have numbers or information embedded into the sides of the negative. Many smaller format camera original negatives do not have retouching on them or numbers due to their smaller size. 8x10, 5x7 and 4x5 negatives were primarily the sizes used in the 1920s through the 1940s. 2 1/4" Rollei negatives and 35mm negatives became an industry standard in the 1950s and beyond until the digital revolution in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Note: We have 17 images of the negatives in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 17 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 7. Note that this auction also includes the printed envelope this item originally came with! This is a very special auction of 444 extremely rare negatives and transparencies of various sizes. EVERY single one in this auction is either "studio issued" (meaning it was created by the studio and sent to theaters and movie outlets), OR it is a "camera original" (meaning it was the actual negative that was in the camera when the photographer took the picture). Every auction clearly identifies which they are, and there are no items being auctioned that are not either "studio issue" or "camera originals". We have divided them by type and size. Also note that every one of these 444 auctions have had their transparencies and/or negatives scanned expertly. This auction contains that scan with the "eMoviePoster.com" watermark over it. ONLY the winner of this auction will, on request, be sent UNWATERMARKED scan(s) of the items in this auction, which will both save them the time and expense of scanning them themselves, and also allow them to make high quality positive prints of the items they purchased.
