An Original Vintage 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Still (Learn More)

Johnny Shines was a black African American blues singer and guitarist from the 1930s to the 1990s. Shines played throughout the southern United States until he settled in Chicago. There he found work in the construction industry but continued to play in local bars. In 1952, Shines recorded what is considered his best work, but the recordings were a commercial failure. He was rediscovered in 1966 when he recorded tracks for the third volume of Chicago/The Blues/Today, which became a blues classic, and it brought Shines into the mainstream music scene. He passed away in 1992 at the age of 76.
Important Added Info: Note that this is one of sixteen great stills we were consigned that all show black African American musical performers. Such stills are extremely rare. All are clearly originals and most have information on the back indicating that they were publicity stills. In several cases, we have never had any other stills showing these performers, so this is a very rare chance to purchase one or more of these! Also note that this still was printed on Kodak paper, but we know it is an original still. Photographers of this time would often have their stills printed on Kodak paper, as this one did, and then they would stamp it with their information, as Mr. Hawkins did.

Condition: good to very good. The still was used in a newspaper or magazine there are crop marks and printer instructions around the edges, showing what portion of the still to reproduce. Otherwise, the still is in nice condition!
