Vercingetorix was a king and chieftain of the Arverni tribe (a Celtic tribe located in what is today the French Auvergne region) and he united the Gauls in a revolt against Roman forces during Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars. However, at the Battle of Alesia, the Romans besieged and defeated his forces, and in order to save as many of his men as possible, he surrendered to Caesar.
