An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Other Company Half-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) Charlie Chan in City in Darkness, the 1939 Herbert I. Leeds mystery crime thriller ("Based on a play by Gina Kaus and Ladisalus Fodor") starring Sidney Toler (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Lynn Bari, Richard Clarke, Harold Huber, Leo G. Carroll, Lon Chaney Jr., Pedro de Cordoba, Dorothy Tree, C. Henry Gordon, Douglas Dumbrille, and Noel Madison. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! This was a company in the Midwest that from roughly 1936 to roughly 1941 printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts and half-sheets) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They never have the name of the releasing studio on the poster or any of the lobby cards. Sometimes, "other company" posters or lobby cards have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters or lobby cards! Also note that this poster was machine folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good. Learn More about condition grades
