An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Asphalt Jungle, the classic 1950 John Huston (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) crime film noir ("MGM presents the story of the city under the city."; "From a novel by W.R. Burnett"; about a "perfect robbery" with a team of top professionals, but of course, everything unravels, partially through double-crosses; perhaps the best movie of its kind!) starring Sterling Hayden, Louis Calhern, Jean Hagen, James Whitmore, Sam Jaffe (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), John McIntire, Marilyn Monroe, Marc Lawrence, Barry Kelley, Anthony Caruso, Teresa Celli, Brad Dexter, Don Haggerty, and Daniel Clarke NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that Marilyn Monroe was a virtual unknown when this classic film noir movie was first released in 1950, and did not even receive billing on any of the posters. The primary ad campaign for this movie was a text only poster, with the words "THE ASPHALT JUNGLE", with the tagline "THE CITY UNDER THE CITY", written in a cool font and design (the one-sheet has no image whatsoever). Yet, the poster designers recognized the value of having a sexy woman's image in some of the advertising (most notably the six-sheet and insert, but the best poster of all is the rare style B half-sheet, where Monroe absolutely dominates the poster, both in the center and in a side image!), but she does not appear at all on most of the other posters. In 1954, the movie received a full-scale re-release, and MGM billed Marilyn Monroe as though she was a major star of the movie! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Condition: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had been hand-folded once in each direction and there were rough creases on both folds. There were a few creases and scuffs scattered in the rest of the poster and there were some creases, smudges, and tears around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The restorer paperbacked the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did virtually no restoration to the defects described above, but the paperbacking process has greatly minimized how noticeable the creases and other minor defects are, and I think this great poster will display fantastically on anyone's wall!
