An Original 1932 (from the first release of this movie in Sweden) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Swedish Movie Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/4" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) An American Tragedy, the 1931 Josef von Sternberg romantic love triangle murder courtroom lawyer legal melodrama ("Based upon the novel 'An American Tragedy' by Theodore Dreiser"; about a working class man with a working class girlfriend, but then he acquires a rich girlfriend, and it seems that he will have a wonderful life, but his first girlfriend turns up pregnant, and he is sorely tempted to do anything to get her out of the picture) starring Phillips Holmes, Sylvia Sidney, Frances Dee, Irving Pichel, Frederick Burton, and Charles Middleton. Note that this movie was re-made in 1951 under the title "A Place in the Sun", with Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, and Shelley Winters in the lead roles. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of this movie, which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", re-titled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Gosta Aberg Important Added Info: Note that posters of any kind from this first adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's classic book are incredibly rare. That is a shame, because it was made by Josef von Sternberg and starred Sylvia Sidney and the ill-fated Phillips Holmes! In all our years of auctioning, we have NEVER auctioned even a single first release poster of any kind until we were just consigned this wonderful first release Swedish poster with incredible artwork! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was tri-folded and had a tiny tear and a few tiny creases near the center of the upper fold. It had a few other partial folds, but they were very faint. It had some small tears in the borders, with three small areas of paper loss in the lower right blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and next to no restoration was performed, nor was it needed. The backer did not replace the missing paper in the lower right blank border, likely surely knowing it would not show when the poster was framed. The poster was displayed in our consignor's home for years, and it has faded (originally, the poster had red stripes with a darker blue field behind the stars). If there were many examples of this poster, then it would be similar to the situation that exists with the first release U.S. "Vertigo" posters, where there are "red" versions and "orange" versions, and some people feel it was printed both ways. However, this is the only example of this poster we know of, so "it is what it is", and if one wants to own it, they need to be able to accept the color change. It is still attractive, and can certainly be displayed as it is, or the new owner could have the colors restored, but this is a significant issue that must be considered before placing a bid on this wonderful poster.
