A Linenbacked Dutch Special Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 34 1/4" [60 x 87 cm]) (Learn More) Volk Van Nederland Ontwapent U (literally translates to "People of the Netherlands Disarm Yourselves"), the 1929 Dutch peace disarmament anti-war protest poster featuring Frans Spuybroek artwork of a skull, an airplane, and civilians dying from a green poison gas. Note that the immense loss of life during World War I (WWI) caused a change in public attitudes towards militarism. Organizations formed in the 1920s included the War Resisters' International, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the No More War Movement, Never-War-Again-Federation and the Peace Pledge Union. The League of Nations also convened several disarmament conferences in the inter-war period such as the Geneva Conferences. The Dutch reflected on the nature and consequences of modern warfare and on the position of their country in the world. Their responses to and reflections on the war were influenced by the neutral position of the Netherlands. In the 1920s the pacifist memory of the war as mass suffering in an allegedly senseless conflict prevailed until World War II (WWII). The use of toxic chemicals as weapons dates back thousands of years, but the first large scale use of chemical weapons was during World War I. The types of weapons employed ranged from disabling chemicals, such as tear gas, to lethal agents like phosgene, chlorine, and mustard gas. The use of poison gas by all major belligerents throughout the war constituted war crimes as its use violated 1899 and 1907 Hague declarations. Widespread horror and public revulsion at the use of gas and its consequences led to far less use of chemical weapons by combatants during World War II (WWII). Artist: Frans Spuybroek Important Added Info: Note that this is the rare 1929 original poster, and is not any sort of later printing or reproduction, and we have never auctioned it before.
