An Original Vintage Unfolded Autographed German Stage Play Poster (measures 23 1/2" x 33 1/4" [60 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Selektion (literally translates to "Selection"), the 1996 Gottfried Helnwein & Gert Hof German performance art event that was held at the Kulturbrauerei in Berlin, Germany on November 9th. Note that this poster features a disturbing image by Gottfried Helnwein. Helnwein is an Austrian-Irish visual artist whose work is concerned primarily with psychological and sociological anxiety, historical issues and political topics. The metaphor for his art is dominated by the image of the child, particularly the wounded child, scarred physically and emotionally from within. His works often reference taboo and controversial issues from recent history, especially the Nazi rule and the horror of the Holocaust. As a result, his work is often considered provocative and controversial. Also, note that this event took place on November 9th, an important date in German history (the November Revolution in 1918, Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch in 1923, the Kristallnacht in 1938 and the day the Berlin Wall fell in 1989). This event focused on Kristallnacht (also known as the Night of Broken Glass and Reichskristall Night) which was a pogrom against Jews throughout Nazi Germany which was carried out by SA paramilitary forces and German civilians.
