Dupont's trapeze romantic love triangle, different & rare! Date Sold 3/21/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 37" x 56" [94 x 142 cm]) (Learn More) Salto Mortale (literally translates to "Deadly Jump" or "Fatal Jump"), the 1931 E.A. Dupont French/German circus trapeze romantic love triangle melodrama (about three trapeze performers in a circus who perform an extremely dangerous stunt, and it is complicated greatly by the fact that the two male performers are both in love with the female, setting up the potential for murder in the air) starring Gina Manes, Daniel Mendaille, Leon Roger-Maxime (billed as "Roger Maxime"), Francois Viguier (billed as "Viguier"), and Alfred Manchard. Note that if this movie seems extremely familiar, it is with good reason! Not only did director E.A. Dupont previously have his greatest success with "Variety" (which had a different plot, but which was set in a circus and had three trapeze artists in a love triangle), but also this movie was simultaneously filmed in both this French version, and also in a German version (Dupont directed both, but the German version starred then-unknown to U.S. audiences Anna Sten and Anton Walbrook). Then, in 1953, there was a German remake of this movie, and in the same year, an English language version was made called "Man on a Tightrope". Then, just three years later, the entire plot was "borrowed" for the classic circus movie, "Trapeze", starring Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, and Gina Lollobrigida!. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II Italian poster, which we have never auctioned before (and it measures a slightly different 37" x 56")! The only other poster from this movie we ever auctioned was a French 24x32 poster, which had duotone images from the movie. Virtually no Italian posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only pre-war heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in Italy during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Condition: fair to good. The poster is very fragile and has separation, tears, and some tiny paper loss on parts of many folds and in the borders. The poster is in urgent need of expert professional restoration. But the poster is mostly "all there", and it will likely require little paint restoration within the image. However, please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored! Learn More about condition grades
