Date Sold 1/20/2011Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Movie Theatre Program (measures 9" x 12" [23 x 30 cm]; 96 pages) (Learn More) The Paramount Theatre was a noted 3,664 seat movie palace located at 43rd Street and Broadway in the Times Square district of New York City from 1926 to 1966. It opened with the gala showing of God Gave Me 20 Cents with Mayor Walker and Thomas Edison as guests. The theater housed one of the largest and most admired theater organs ever built by the Wurlitzer company. Designed for the famous organist Jesse Crawford, the organ was used for solos and to accompany silent films. Later, the Paramount began hosting live music along with feature films, and hosted performers such as: Benny Goodman, Jack Benny, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and many more! The theater was closed in 1964 and its space converted to office and retail use. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that when this theater opened in 1926, its owners created a very elaborate 96-page book that gives a long illustrated history of the theater, a long essay on "The Romance of Paramount Pictures" (by Terry Ramsaye), which has illustrations of all of Paramount's top stars, and dozens of pages of ads congratulating Paramount on opening this massive theater. We are calling it a "souvenir program book", but we don't think it was sold, and we don't know if it was only distributed to those who attended the first performance at the theater, or if it was also distributed to others. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Note that we have provided a picture of the front cover of the magazine, and also two pictures of interior two-page spreads (but we didn't make much effort to find the best ones!). These images should greatly help you judge the overall condition of the magazine. Please realize that there were only a few ads in each magazine, and that the bulk of each magazine is taken up by stories about current productions and other information of interest to theater owners (and I don't know that this information can be found anywhere else or that it has been reproduced in any book since its first publication!). Please know that these magazines are sealed in bags and are ready for shipping, and we cannot answer any questions about them or look through them for you, so please bid (or do not bid) based on the images we have provided. Condition: very good. There is some smudging throughout the front and back covers of the program. The program is otherwise in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
