An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) General Spanky, the 1936 Fred Newmeyer & Gordon Douglas Our Gang feature-length military war comedy ("A Hal Roach Full Length Feature"; "70 minutes of delight!"; produced by Hal Roach) starring George 'Spanky' McFarland (in the title role), Phillips Holmes, Ralph Morgan, Irving Pichel, Rosina Lawrence, Eugene 'Porky' Lee, Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer, Billie 'Buckwheat' Thomas, John 'Uh huh' Collum and Willie Best. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", retitled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that lobby cards from this movie are extremely rare! In all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned four lobby cards from this movie, and only one in the last 14 years, until we received this card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. There are stains and areas of paper loss down the left border, with water staining in the bottom left corner, but the above mostly only affects the blank white border and part of the red border (see our images).
