A 1947 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 43 3/4" x 60" [111 x 152 cm]) (Learn More)

Broken Blossoms, the 1936 (released in the U.S. in 1937) John Brahm English family relationship domestic abuse boxing sports religion romantic melodrama ("The greatest screen classic of all time"; "From the Thomas Burke 'Limehouse Nights' story 'The Chink and the Child'"; about a Buddhist missionary who comes to England and falls in love with the abused daughter of a boxer) starring Dolly Haas (billed as "Triumphant Dolly Haas, the sensational new star"), Emlyn Williams (in "yellowface" makeup!), Arthur Margetson, C.V. France, and Basil Radford. Note that this is a remake of the 1919 D.W. Griffith film of the same name starring Lillian Gish in the lead role. Note that star Dolly Haas (who was heavily promoted on the U.S. release posters for this movie as "The Sensational New Star") has a fascinating biography! She was a German dance hall and cabaret performer who started appearing in German movies in the early 1930s, but she left Germany in 1936, and went to England, where she married director John Brahm, who then starred her in his remake of D.W. Griffith's "Broken Blossoms". She was then signed by Columbia, but she hated Hollywood (Harry Cohn wanted her to change her name to Lilli Marlowe!), and she only appeared in bit parts. She then divorced her husband in 1941, and moved to New York, where she appeared on the Broadway stage, and she married illustrator Al Hirschfeld in 1943, and they were married until her death in 1994 (and Hirschfeld's famous daughter, Nina, is her daughter too).
