Note that this is widely considered one of the greatest Mexican movies ever, even though it was made by Luis Bunuel, who was from Spain. He filmed the movie in Mexico soon after World War II, and he was obviously greatly influenced by Vittorio De Sica's "Sciuscia" (Shoeshine) from 1946, and perhaps even the Dead End Kid movies of the 1930s. This movie resembles "The Lord of the Flies", in that it shows just how lawless and cruel children can be when they grow up in awful circumstances. It is not an easy movie to watch, but it absolutely should be seen! Note that in 1981, Hector Babenco made the movie "Pixote", which was clearly an homage to this movie.
