An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Vertical British Quad Movie Poster (BQ; Quad Crown; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) The Star of Bethlehem, the 1912 Lawrence Marston Thanhouser silent religious melodrama biblical short ("Behold the hand maid of the Lord be unto me according to thy word") starring Florence La Badie (as Mary), James Cruze (as Micah/Joseph), William Russell (as Herod), Harry Benham (as Angel Gabriel), and Justus D. Barnes (as Gaspar, a Magi). Note that film buffs know of James Cruze as a major director of the 1920s, but very few know that he was a very active actor from 1911 to 1919, appearing in over 100 movies, including this one, where he played a lead role as Joseph. This was in his second year of acting, and in 1919, he mostly quit acting and directed full time, and was responsible for many of the top 1920s movies, including The Covered Wagon. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned once example of this this vertical British quad poster before (and it sold for $577)! Few people know that in the early days of British quads, they were originally in a vertical format (but they measured 30" x 40", just as they continue to do throughout the years). This is because so few of them survive, almost surely because of the massive paper shortages in England during World War II! At some point in the 1950s, they changed orientation to be horizontal, and they have remained that way to the present day. Finally note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II English poster! Virtually no English posters survive from the 1940s or earlier, because during World War II there were many paper shortages resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Finally that this poster was folded at one time, but it has been stored flat, and because it is somewhat fragile we are not refolding it and it will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: fair to good. The poster has an area of paper loss at center (see our image). There are several tears to its left and there are tiny tears and some darkening around the blank borders. After proper restoration (we can provide a detailed image of that area of paper loss to assist in the poster's restoration) the very rare poster will display well, but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
