Mankiewicz English/Swiss/U.S. Egypt historical romantic pseudo-biography epic ("The No1 of all time"; "See Cleopatra triumphant entry into Rome!"; "See the thrilling battle of Actium!"; "See the brutal assassination of Caesar!"; "See the love affairs that destroyed an empire!"; "See the victorious Roman army occupy Cleopatra's Empire"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the novel by Carlo Mario Franzero) starring Elizabeth Taylor (in the title role as Cleopatra), Richard Burton ("as Mark Antony"), Rex Harrison (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; "as Julius Caesar"), Pamela Brown, George Cole, Hume Cronyn, Cesare Danova, Kenneth Haigh (as Brutus), Roddy McDowall (as Octavian), Loris Loddi, and Francesca Annis. Note that this epic production created epic problems for 20th Century-Fox! Huge salaries and many production delays caused the budget for the movie to soar to then record heights, and it almost bankrupted the studio! Initially, Peter Finch was cast as Julius Caesar and Stephen Boyd as "Mark Antony", and this trade ad, which was released at the very start of production, has them billed under Elizabeth Taylor. But during filming in England, she became ill, and production had to be halted, since she was in virtually every scene of the movie. Director Rouben Mamoulian quit to work on another project, and so did Peter Finch and Stephen Boyd, who had to quit due to prior commitments for other movies, and they were of course replaced by Rex Harrison and Richard Burton. Important Added Info: Note that these roadshow lobby cards (used for the first limited release of this movie) were printed with "TODD-AO" in between "CLEOPATRA" and "COLOR BY DE LUXE", but the theater that used these cards did not show the movie in that process, so they glued a studio-issued snipe over that area (which has since been removed). Condition: good. Each has some amount of creases and scuffs (see our images). The scene cards have a snipe glued at bottom (see above). The one with Taylor in the bathtub has discoloration and rippling along the lower edge. The title card has a snipe under the credits, and a tear at right that has been repaired with tape from the back.
