An Original Vintage Theatrical Window Card Movie Poster (Learn More) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, the 1939 Sidney Lanfield crime detective mystery thriller (based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) starring Richard Greene, Basil Rathbone (as Sherlock Holmes), Wendy Barrie, Nigel Bruce (as Dr. Watson), Lionel Atwill, John Carradine, Barlowe Borland, Beryl Mercer, Morton Lowry, Ralph Forbes, and Eily Malyon. Note that this was the very first of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies, produced by 20th Century-Fox. It was followed by a same year sequel, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", also from 20th Century-Fox. Fox did not make anymore of these, but in 1942, Universal bought the rights to the character and released "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" (which brought Holmes out of the Victorian age and into the present, which greatly reduced production costs), and they quickly turned out a number of sequels in what proved to be an extremely popular series.
