Date Sold 4/14/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Autographed One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo, the 1937 Eugene Forde Monaco Asian detective mystery crime gambling casino thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; "Original Story by Robert Ellis and Helen Logan") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Virginia Field, Sidney Blackmer, Harold Huber, Kay Linaker, and Robert Kent. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Keye Luke (he added "#1 Son" after his signature)! Our consignor is a longtime collector who purchased this signed item from a reputable dealer. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to surely be authentic (because no one would forge a signature on a very expensive poster that would not add significantly to its value). Also note that we have only previously auctioned three examples of this one-sheet, and the last one was 5 years ago, when it sold for $2,415! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had an extra vertical fold 1/2" to the left of the regular one, with creases and small tears scattered down that area. It had a few tears to the right of the vertical fold in the man's jacket at center. It had additional folds above the right half of each horizontal fold, at a slight diagonal, with some surface paper loss on parts of many folds. It had thumb tack holes and stains in the borders. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed the poster with very slight restoration. If I owned this wonderful poster, I would surely have a top professional remove it from the old linen and properly re-back it, being careful to protect the signature and inscription. Afterward, it will display well, but bear all this in mind before you bid on this rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
