Date Sold 8/7/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Olympics, the 1937 H. Bruce Humberstone Asian detective Berlin Germany sports crime mystery thriller ("Murderous spies invade Olympic games!"; "A new world's record for thrills ....even for Chan!"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Katherine DeMille, Pauline Moore, Allan 'Rocky' Lane, Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), C. Henry Gordon, Jonathan Hale, and Morgan Wallace. Note that the events in this movie take place at the infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics, where Adolf Hitler presided over the games, hoping they would prove Germany's Aryan superiority, but of course, exactly the reverse occurred! Also note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: very good. The card had paper loss in the top left blank corner, with a few tiny bits of paper loss in the rest of the borders. Overall, the card was in very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed excellent restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the card still exactly looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but the card displays really well! Learn More about condition grades
