An Original 1937 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23 1/2" x 32 3/4" [60 x 83 cm]) (Learn More) The Road to Glory, the 1936 Howard Hawks World War I (WWI) military romantic love triangle melodrama (scripted by William Faulkner) starring Fredric March, Warner Baxter, Lionel Barrymore, June Lang, and Gregory Ratoff. Note that the movie concerns two French officers in World War I and their love for the same woman, and a subplot concerning a very old enlisted man who turns out to be one of the officer's father. The movie was loosely adapted from the 1932 French movie "Le Croix des Bois". Also, "The Road to Glory" happens to be the name of Howard Hawks' very first directorial effort in 1926, but other than the title and director, there is no relationship between the two movies. Finally, note that the movie has a recurring theme where one of the officers has to keep giving a pep talk to a bunch of new recruits that he knows will suffer great casualties, and there are anti-war elements to the movie, and it seems certain that Stanley Kubrick was influenced by the plot from this classic movie when he made "Paths of Glory". Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had minor wear on the foldlines and some faint water staining in the top center, extending into Baxter's face (but it is barely noticeable from any distance). There were some creases around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed onto a fairly thin linen, and at some point after it was backed, it became heavily rippled throughout, and it does not lay flat (if I owned this poster, I would have it re-backed, after which it will look great, and it is also possible that a talented restorer could "flatten" it in some way). But please read our description above and look at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
