An Original 1934 (from the continuous first release of this movie) Vintage Theatrical French Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

L'Atalante (Le Chaland Qui Passe) (literally translates to "L'Atalante [The Barge Who Passed]"), the classic 1934 (released in the U.S. in 1947) Jean Vigo French romantic comedy starring Michel Simon, Dita Parlo (she was a sexy German actress of the late 1920s who had great success in two French movies, "La Grande Illusion" in 1937 and this movie; she came to the United States, and was going to be in Orson Welles' version of Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", but that movie fell through; she is idolized by Madonna!), Jean Daste, Gilles Margaritis, and Louis Lefebvre. Note that this 89-minute movie was first shown in April 1934, perhaps only to exhibitors and distributors at a single theater in Paris. This version is lost. In September 1934, Gaumont attempted to recoup its investment in the movie and hired Louis Chavance to cut it to 67 minutes, and a new musical score was added, and it was re-titled "Le Chaland Qui Passe", but it was still unpopular and had a very limited release. In 1940, there was a new version that restored some portions of the original version, and it was advertised as "L'Atlante (Le Chalant Qui Passe)", and it was shown in France and England in 1940, and later, in 1947, in the U.S. In 1950, the Cinematheque Francaise released an 83-minute version, and while it did not restore the original, but rather combined all available versions and even outtakes and rushes! In 1990, Gaumont issued yet another restored version based on the BFI's copy, which was not the complete first version, but was the most complete one existing, and they added in a few added minutes so that it would be the same running time as the 89-minute original! First release posters from any of the pre-World War II versions of this movie are incredibly rare!

Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" lobby card for the September 1934 release of this French movie (see above)! Also note that very early French lobby cards were like later Swiss lobby cards, where they would have a stock cardboard background with information about the movie and a blank rectangular area in the center where they would glue a different still to each stock background, thus creating a set of lobby cards for less money than having all different cards would cost. ANY French lobby cards from before World War II are incredibly rare!

Condition: good to very good.
