An Original 1949 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 1/4" x 31 1/2" [59 x 80 cm]) (Learn More) Ladri di Biciclette (released in the U.S. in 1949 as "The Bicycle Thief" and in England as "Bicycle Thieves"), the classic 1948 Vittorio De Sica Italian neorealist melodrama ("Academy Award outstanding foreign language film 1949"; about a man and his son who search for a vital missing bicycle; most people rightfully consider this one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Lamberto Maggiorani, Enzo Staiola, Lianella Carell, Gino Saltamerenda, and Vittorio Antonucci. Note that the Italian title literally translates to "The Bicycle Thieves", but for unknown reasons, the movie became "The Bicycle Thief" when it was released in English-speaking countries! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jacques Grognel Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this poster, and the buyer of that poster has now reconsigned it to us, so this is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned! Also note that the poster says "PATHE CONSORTIUM CINEMA" at the top. In the 1920s through the 1940s, movies in France were given one release in the major cities and another release in rural areas, and different posters were prepared for the separate releases. This poster is from the "rural" release of this movie. There were also separate posters printed for the release in the major cities, but they are incredibly rare (and we have never before auctioned this poster). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had some tiny bits of paper loss in the top and bottom of the vertical fold and minor wear on the rest of the folds. It had some tiny pinholes in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
