Date Sold 9/8/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo, the 1937 Eugene Forde Monaco Asian detective mystery crime gambling casino thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; "Original Story by Robert Ellis and Helen Logan") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Virginia Field, Sidney Blackmer, Harold Huber, Kay Linaker, and Robert Kent. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this one-sheet is extremely rare! We have only previously auctioned two examples of it, and only one of those was in the last 27 years. This poster is the very same poster as the first example of the poster we auctioned, 27 years ago. The person who purchased it in that auction has re-consigned it to us, so it is still only one of two examples of this poster we have ever auctioned. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and a few creases and separation along parts of the folds, with pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
