An Original Vintage Theatrical 7 1/4" x 9" [18 x 23 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Camille, the 1921 Ray C. Smallwood silent France doomed romance romantic melodrama (based on the story by Alexandre Dumas fils; about the French son of a noble family who is a law student and he falls for a beautiful prostitute; she reforms for him and they live in poverty, but the young man's father feels disgraced, and he convinces the woman to give up his son, and she returns to her former life, and he, not knowing what his father did, meets her publicly and denounces her, but she does not enlighten him, and at the climax, she dies holding a gift he gave her) starring Alla Nazimova (billed as "Nazimova"; as Marguerite Gautier/Camille), Rudolph Valentino, Arthur Hoyt, Patsy Ruth Miller, and Zeffie Tilbury. Note that this classic story was made into a movie many times in the silent days. The most memorable versions are this one, the 1926 version starring Norma Talmadge, and the 1936 sound version starring Greta Garbo. Also note that Alla Nazimova was born Mariam Edez Adelaida Leventon in Russia in 1879. She was a pupil of Stanislavsky (and his "method" style of acting). She became a major stage star there, and came to the United States in the mid-1910s and made eleven movies for Metro in three years. She produced movies that flopped badly, and she returned to the stage, returning to make a very few movies in the 1940s. She is as famous for her off screen behavior as for her on screen behavior! Also note that Rudolph Valentino was still a somewhat lesser star when this movie was made (he would make The Sheik soon after and become a superstar), and he is not given billing on the advertising for this movie, and Nazimova is billed above the title. Nazimova selected him for this part, and the set and costume designer for the movie was Natacha Rambova (really unusual and outrageous designs), and Nazimova introduced Rambova to Valentino and they fell in love and were married!
