An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Lobby Card (Learn More) The Revenge of Tarzan, the 1920 Harry Revier & George M. Merrick silent Africa kidnapping romantic action adventure jungle thriller (based on the novel The Return of Tarzan "by Edgar Rice Burroughs"; Tarzan tangles with the evil Russian Nikolas Rokoff, who kidnaps Jane and takes her to Africa, but Tarzan rescues her) starring Gene Pollar (in the title role as Tarzan), Walter Miller, Karla Schramm, Armand Cortes, George Romain, and Estelle Taylor. Note that Tarzan of the Apes was the 1914 novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and was the basis of two movies, "Tarzan of the Apes" in 1918, and "The Romance of Tarzan" in 1919 (both starring Elmo Lincoln as Tarzan). "The Revenge of Tarzan" was based on the 1915 novel "The Return of Tarzan", and Gene Pollar took over the role of Tarzan. There is a fascinating bit of trivia about this movie. It was originally titled "The Return of Tarzan" (just as the source novel was), and some posters were printed with that title. But at the last minute, it was changed to the more dynamic title "The Revenge of Tarzan", and posters were printed with that title instead. This is the exact opposite of the situation that existed with George Lucas' "Return of the Jedi" many decades later, which was originally title "Revenge of the Jedi", but had its title changed at the last minute to make it sound less violent. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that, in the early days of movie making, when lobby cards were first made (around 1915), studios would issue sets of the cards in two sizes; the regular 11" x 14" size, and a smaller 8" x 10" size. The cards were identical in every way except for the different size. This practice continued through the early 1920s, at which point the studios abandoned the smaller lobby cards, likely because theaters either ordered 11" x 14" lobby cards or 8" x 10" stills, and did not order enough of the 8" x 10" lobby cards to justify them continuing to make them. Condition: good to very good. There is a snipe with the title glued at bottom center, and there is surface paper loss in the bottom left blank corner. There is a faint diagonal glue stain in the bottom center, running from the top right of the snipe up into the man's hand at center. Otherwise, the card is in nice condition!
