An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 12" x 18" [30 x 46 cm]; 16 pages). Also included is an ad supplement that has 4 pages. (Learn More) Eight Bells, the 1935 Roy William Neill romantic love triangle adventure melodrama ("A beautiful girl and 60 maddened men... fighting for a chance at life!"; "Trapped on a sinking ship.. ...they mutinied against law and convention.. fought for one fleeting hour of life!"; "From the play by Percy Mandley"; about the daughter of a steamship owner who stows away on one of his ships, alone with 60 men, and both the captain and the first mate fall in love with her, and then the crew mutinies and the ship goes through a typhoon to boot) starring Ann Sothern, Ralph Bellamy, John Buckler, Catherine Doucet, and Arthur Hohl. Note that you probably don't recognize the name "John Buckler" and wonder how he was third billed in this movie! He was the son of a noted English actor, Hugh Buckler, and they came to Hollywood, and it looked like the son was off to having a promising career, with parts in David Copperfield and Tarzan Escapes, but after making that movie, both father and son were out driving in Malibu, and their car went off the road and into the ocean, and both men died, and John Buckler was just 30 years old. Important Added Info: Note that we were recently consigned a truly remarkable collection of pressbooks (the first 37 were auctioned in our December Major Auction, and the most expensive one sold for $17,500!). In our January 15th auctions, we auctioned another 59 from this collection. In our February 15th auctions, we auctioned another 159. Now we continue to auction more of these pressbooks, which is absolutely the finest collection of pressbooks we have ever been consigned. In this set of auctions, we are solely auctioning larger pressbooks, mostly 11" x 15" or larger. Some of them were folded at one time, but they were stored unfolded for many years, so we left them unfolded, and unless the new owner requests otherwise, we will send them unfolded, because re-folding them would likely lessen the condition. Many of these are ones we have either never auctioned before or only once auctioned before, sometimes many years ago. These were collected decades ago, which was the only time that many of these could be found, and after these auctions are over it may be years (or decades!) before some of these are offered again. They ARE that rare! Note that pressbooks from the 1930s are almost never found in great condition, and some of them (especially those printed during World War II, including all the MGM ones from that time) are printed on newsprint, and are hard to find in even lesser condition. We have several images from each pressbook. We have given each an overall grade, and ask that you look at our images to get a good sense of the condition of that pressbook, because, since they have many pages, it would take forever to describe their condition in detail. However, EVERY one of these pressbooks is complete and uncut! Note that we have never before auctioned this pressbook! Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good, NO CUTS. Note that we solely give an overall grade to these rare pressbooks, and tell you whether it is complete and uncut. However, you can view our multiple images of the covers and the interior pages that should give you a good sense of the pressbook's condition. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle. The covers are separated at the spine. Learn More about condition grades
