Date Sold 5/1/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Egypt, the 1935 Louis King Northern Africa Asian detective crime mystery thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Pat Paterson, Rita Hayworth (billed as "Rita Cansino"; in an extremely early role!), Thomas Beck, Stepin Fetchit, Jameson Thomas, and Frank Conroy. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release movie paper from this early Charlie Chan movie has always been incredibly scarce. We auctioned an Australian daybill 17 years ago, but since that time, we have only auctioned two different lobby cards (and neither showed Oland, and both were in lesser condition), and no other movie posters or lobby cards until we were consigned this great lobby card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. The card had a 5" crease in the left of the bottom border, extending up through Oland's sleeve. It had a 3" crease in the upper right, extending into the very back of the man's hair. Someone put tape on the back of both of those creases and also a tiny piece of tape on the back of the bottom right corner, which was slightly detached, and a tiny piece of tape on the back of a crease in the top border. The card also had a 3" vertical crease in the left of the top border that extended into Oland's hat that did not have any tape on the back. Other than these relatively minor defects, the card is in pretty nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
