An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Chandu the Magician, the 1932 William Cameron Menzies & Marcel Varnel science fiction (sci-fi) fantasy adventure thriller ("From the radio drama by Harry A. Earnshaw & R.R. Morgan"; about a scientist who invents a "death ray", and a madman kidnaps him, but Chandu the Magician shows up and rescues the scientist) starring Edmund Lowe (in the title role as Chandu the Magician), Irene Ware, Bela Lugosi (as Roxor, the kidnapping madman), Herbert Mundin, Henry B. Walthall, and Weldon Heyburn. Note that Chandu the Magician was a radio show that started airing in Los Angeles in 1931, and went nationwide the following year. That was also when this movie version was made. Two years later, a sequel, The Return of Chandu, was made, and this time, Bela Lugosi played the lead role, after having a supporting role in this one. The show went off the air in 1936. It was revived in 1948 as a 15 minute show and ran for two years. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned four single scene lobby cards from this movie over the last 17 years, and we also once auctioned a complete set of 8 cards, but that was 30 years ago (and those sold for $4,370). Now we are currently offering THREE lobby cards from this movie, including this great title card, in three separate auctions! Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good. The card had pinholes, small tears, and small paper loss around the edges, with pinholes in the corners of the image. There were stains in Lowe's face at upper right and also in the face of the woman at lower left, with some pinholes and tiny tears in her figure. There were light stains scattered in the yellow background areas and a pinhole between the "S" and "I" of "LUGOSI". Overall, the card was in fair to good condition prior to restoration. Given the card's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration, and the card displays pretty well (see our super-sized images to get a good sense of exactly how the card looks now).
