Hall, Ray Trampe"; about a youthful adventurer who travels to Africa in search of his lost father, and he must fight the mysterious "Spider Webb") starring Frankie Thomas (in the title role "as Tim Tyler"), Frances Robinson ("as Lora Lacey"), Jack Mulhall ("as 'Sergeant Gates'"), Norman Willis ("as Spider Webb"), Al Shean ("as Professor Tyler"), William 'Billy' Benedict, Pat J. O'Brien (not THE Pat O'Brien who was part of the "Irish Mafia" with Cagney and McHugh, but another actor who appeared in 17 films between 1921 and 1941), and Jack Leonard (as the man in the gorilla suit). Note that Jack Leonard was one of the first men to play gorillas in movies. He was an extra in Tarzan the Ape Man, and the director did not like the way the men in ape suits were performing, and Jack Leonard said he could do better, and he was given the part! He and his wife made his gorilla suit and he studied real life gorillas to see how they moved and the sounds they made. He appeared in a dozen movies between 1932 and 1940, nine times of them as an ape! We don't know what happened to him after that (perhaps he passed away). If anyone knows more about Jack Leonard, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that Ray 'Crash' Corrigan and Charles Gemora were two actors who played lots of gorillas in movies in the 1930s and 1940s. Emil Van Horn and Jack Leonard each played around a dozen gorillas, and interestingly, that was all they did (no doubt all four of them owned a gorilla suit!). Also note that Lyman Young, the creator of this comic strip, was the older brother of Chic Young, creator of "Blondie"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned one example of this extremely rare poster in all our years of auctioning, and that was a decade ago when it sold for $333! It is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Also, note that this serial was released in 12 separate chapters in the United States, but only 4 separate chapters in France. Obviously each French chapter featured 3 U.S. chapters! Finally, note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good to very good. The poster has darkened somewhat. It has pinholes, creases, defects, areas of paper loss and tears of varying lengths along parts of some edges and there is general fold and border wear. There is approximately 3" of separation at the bottom of the vertical foldline and there are a few minor patches of slight discoloration in portions of the edges. After linenbacking with some proper restoration the very rare poster should display well! Learn More about condition grades
